VITEX AGNUS-CASTUS

Vitex agnus-castus is a small tree native to southeastern Europe and western Asia and is a popular garden shrub in North America. It's often known as chaste tree, and the fruits as chaste tree berries, from the antique belief that the plant inspires chastity - it was used in ancient Greece and Rome to reduce libido. Medieval monks are said to have used the berries for the same purpose, hence another popular name, "Monk's pepper" - the ripe fruits are dried for use and resemble a peppercorn in appearance and size. The berry powder is often used in calming supplements for moody mares and riggy geldings because of its apparent hormone-regulating capabilities.
